Atherton Tablelands, Cairns

#5 of 20 in Parks in Cairns
Wildlife Area · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
A fertile plateau situated well into the tropics, Atherton Tablelands is part of the Great Dividing Range. The focal point of the plateau is Lake Tinaroo, a popular tourist stop suitable for swimming, water sports, bushwalking, fishing, and camping. The area's elevated position gives it a temperate climate favorable to dairy farming. For a trip off the beaten track, join a popular food trail tour with guided visits to local plantations and farms. Regional produce includes locally grown and processed coffee, wine, cheese, chocolate, and seafood. The tablelands also contain several small remnants of the rainforest that once covered it, many of which are now protected in national parks.
