Neues Palais, Potsdam

4.4
#4 of 19 in Historic Sites in Potsdam
The last great Prussian Baroque palace, Neues Palais was a royal playground complete with a theater and several stunning rooms, including Grotto Hall, where the walls are encrusted with marble, quartz, seashells, and stones. The theater is still in use on the second floor, but before you attend a performance, tour the maze of rooms. Your ticket includes access to four grand staterooms, royal apartments, and a tour of the theater. A performance will require a separate ticket. Take advantage of good weather by walking the palace grounds with the Comuns, which housed the servants and the kitchen, and a park where statuary, fountains, and pathways break through the greenery. • Since the tickets for Sanssouci Castle had already sold out, we visited the new palace and took part in the guided tour. This gave us an extensive insight into the castle, the rooms and the historical. The entrance fee of 8 euros is perfectly fine.

  • The atmosphere is different from the yellow appearance of the Palace of Sanssouci, and the new palace looks like a pink color. Some of the rooms are decorated with seashells, various paintings are exhibited, and chandeliers made from Meissen pottery.

  • As someone from NYC, this park blows Central Park out of the water. The entire park is full of artwork and scenery. Wherever in the park you are there is something to see. If you're in Berlin and have a free day or even a half day to train to Potsdam it's well worth the trip.
  • While visiting Berlin, I decided to take a tour of Frederick the Great's castle in Potsdam. I was totally awestruck with everything I laid my eyes on from the 250 year old chandeliers to the vast ballrooms with ornate marble flooring. I even saw a shower in one of the bathrooms which really illustrated the level of luxury the King was immersed in at that point in history. The huge paintings were life like and it felt as though the figures in those paintings were looking directly at you in an effort to reach out and touch you. There were over 200 rooms in this palace and this was merely Frederick's summer house. Absolutely incredible structure inside and out and totally unforgettable. I highly recommend tourists to spend a day enjoying the sights in this palace.
