First excavated by archeologists in 1864, The Western Wall Tunnels allow visitors access to an enclosed 485 m (1,591 ft) of the famous retaining wall that served as a support for King Herod's Second Temple expansion. The tunnels run underneath the buildings in Jerusalem's old town, lending insights into the architectural strategies and water collection technologies that enabled the temple's construction. The tunnels are quite narrow and dark; booking a guide beforehand or joining an ongoing tour is the only way to partake in the experience. PutThe Western Wall Tunnels into our Jerusalem trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.
