#16 of 160 in Museums in Rome
Visit the approximately 400 Roman statues, inscriptions, and mosaics at Centrale Montemartini, an industrial archaeological site showcasing the artifacts recovered from excavations during the unification of Italy. Housed in an abandoned power plant, the museum juxtaposes ancient statues and art with the steel machinery of industrialism, bringing up interesting questions about the course of human development and civilization. Don't miss iconic exhibits like “Venus in the Boiler Room.” Put Centrale Montemartini into our Rome trip planning app and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • An old power plant saved from destruction restructured by combining huge machines and ancient art. The sarcophagi - right on entering - are exceptional and much better there than at the bottom of a reserve, like all the works present. For the record anyone residing in Paris, therefore department 75, enters for free on presentation of an identity card.

  • The Montemartini Power Station, named after the Engineer who designed it, gave electricity to the whole of Rome, thanks to large engines powered by the waters of the tiber below. In the decò style is a typical construction of the early 1900s now houses about 400 imperial-era statutes that well mix with the technology of the Central. Successful but too little-known combination! To visit.

  • Make sure you visit here while in Rome. The structures, building, landscape, culture, and most importantly, the history is all right here to learn from. There is so much to do in Rome and it begins all right here. This can be a great starting point to gain a lot of insight while learning the geography. Spent several hours in this area soaking it all in. You will not be disappointed!
  • A highlight of my trip, and a delight to experience, this clash of gods and machines contains some of the most stunning artifacts within a unique, juxtaposed environment. Easy enough to access from the B-line of the metro, arriving early will yield an intimate experience between art and observer. I cannot rate this attraction highly enough. If you have any appreciation of ancient statuary, please, I beg you to just go and experience this museum for yourself.
