Built in the first century CE, Arena di Verona--one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters--has served as an opera venue since 1913. Thanks to the amphitheater's incredible acoustics, electronic microphones were not used here they were finally installed as a sound reinforcement system in 2011. The arena has hosted Alicia Keys, The Who, and Pearl Jam, as well as some of the world's most noteworthy conductors and opera singers. Sitting in the stands, you'll be transported back to Roman times when more than 30,000 people filled the seats to watch shows and games. Most spectacular Roman Arena in the heart of Piazza Bra stands the Roman Amphitheatre that was built in the first half of the 1st century A.D., in the period which marked the end of the Augustus’s Empire and the beginning of Claudius’s. It is one of the largest amphitheatre in Italy; its elliptical shape produces perfect acoustics from any stand point and allows it to accommodate a large number of spectators. The most solemn monument in Roman Verona, with various orders of tiers of seats and, in the centre, an area or arena for gladiator shows, struggles with wild beasts and other events of a popular nature, was built with well-squared blocks of marble in the 1st century A.D., namely between the end of the empire of Augustus and the empire of Claudius.

We last visited in 1993. Good to see all the work being done on the arena. Still well used and well maintained. Like all large roman buildings with lots of marble, it has been mined for nicely squared off stone over the years. Unlike others attempts to.preserve the arena started hundreds of years ago, much of the damage to the currently used areas has been repaired.. Well worth the walk from the youth hostel.
