Senjokaku, Hatsukaichi

Take in the aging and evocative structure of Senjokaku, roughly the size of 1,000 tatami mats. Commissioned in 1587 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (one of the three unifiers of Japan), for the purpose of chanting Buddhist sutras to the fallen heroes of war, the building was incomplete when its commissioner passed away, and remains in a sparse state to this day. Though unfinished and lacking a proper entrance, it remains unspoiled, featuring original artworks and decorations on the ceilings and walls. • On the west side of the five-story pagoda on the north side of Itsukushima Shrine is a fairly large building built in the main building. This is daikeido, which is commonly called Sentakaku, built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, ordered by Ankokuji Ei. It has reached the present as it is unfinished because Hide died in the middle of construction. It is a Toyokuni shrine dedicated to Hideyoshi and Kato Kiyomasa by mixing Gods and Buddhas. I only looked at it from the bottom this time because I had gone up twice in the past, but because the view is opened to the south side in the building on a hill, i can look down on Itsukushima Shrine from above.

  • It is a very splendid hall though it is said. As with the five-story pagoda, the history is old, so the amount of the Edo period is also on.

  • Nice place to chill during sunset. Of course best time to go is the red maple/ gold ginkgo season.
  • You can’t NOT visit this when you are in Miyajima!! Amazing views of the tori and nice to walk around.
