An astounding feat of engineering, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge holds the title of the longest suspension bridge in the world, spanning an incredible 3.9 km (2.4 mi). The product of 2 million workers and 10 years of work, the bridge was completed in 1998, using enough steel cable to circumnavigate the globe a mind-boggling seven times. On the Kobe side of the bridge, consider stopping by the Bridge Exhibition Center for extensive and well-presented information about the structure's design and construction. If you're feeling somewhat brave, take an elevator to the "Maiko Marine Promenade," affording views from 50 m (164 ft) up, below the main platform of the bridge. You can take a far more in-depth guided tour of the bridge if you're a real enthusiast, but bear in mind that this requires an advanced reservation. I am very impressed by the size of this bridge. It is so big that you have to see it in person to believe that it exists. Very nice.
