Explore Japan’s largest cemetery, Koyasan Okunoin, situated on Mount Koya among tall, ancient cedar trees. Cross the first bridge to enter the cemetery, which houses over 200,000 tombstones, and enjoy a peaceful 2 km (1.2 mi) walk to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi’s eternal meditation. Wander between tombs of all shapes and sizes, some covered in moss and some more recent, including the final resting places of important lords and monks. You can also take a shorter path passing by a recent cemetery expansion and view a memorial to pests, which was erected by an exterminator company. Using our custom trip planner, Koya-cho attractions like Koyasan Okunoin can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
