Meet the inhabitants of Noboribetsu Bear Park, an animal observation facility located at the summit of the mountain. Separated by age and sex, the 200 brown bears here have been raised in the facility, with the institution growing from a population of just eight in 1958. Head into the "cage for humans" to see the bears from their own perspective, and feed them salmon and meatballs, which you can buy on site. A museum reveals the history of brown bears on the island, their behavior in the wild, and their cultural importance to the indigenous population. Noboribetsu Bear Park Reviews
I’d give this place a miss. It’s in no way setup for conservation or looking after the bears. It’s just an entertainment business. The areas the bears are kept in are small and lacking... more »
This is the park that was exposed globally for animal cruelty. They breed bears and keep them in overcrowded concrete cages. They sell or slaughter excess cubs and bears. We thought it was like the... more »
Tickets kinda pricy ~2500 per person. You get a gondola ride up and entrance to park. We walked past earlier in the day and it said it was closed due to wind. But came back an hour later and it was open again. When we went up it was really empty,m even though it was 2pm. All the stalls were closed. We saw a duck race, you can bet on ducks and they run. But we saw it once during our time there. The bear show didn’t happen and we weren’t told before hand. No squirrels in the squirrel park. Can buy salmon biscuits to feed bears. 100 yen a bag of about 6 biscuits. The bears will wave and do humorous things to make you throw the treat at them. It’s kinda really sad. Hope the bears get treated okay. There’s also a human cage where you can put the biscuit through a tube and feed the bear that way. Overall just made me feel kind of depressed. The museum was also very bleak and sad. Lots of stuffed bears to take pics with.
Went there during the winter and liked it a lot. We love bears and were delighted to see how well cared for they are. They keep the males separate from the females, and there are a lot more females. You can feed the males up close from a little tunnel, or you can throw treats at them (100 yen for a bag of 6). There's a natural museum that's worth taking a look at, and make sure you go to the top observation deck for the views of the lake. Don't read into the reviews that say it's outdated or sad - it's a working zoo. Bears compete over treats and don't move around unless necessary - sounds like nature to me. Too bad there weren't cubs around when we went.
