The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses
The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of villagers occupying traditional wooden frame houses. These houses, built in the "gassho-zukuri" (prayer hands) style, are known for their steeply slanted roofs, which recall two hands joined in prayer. The homes are very large, built to house entire extended families and family businesses and to withstand the region's heavy snowfall in winter. Enter one or two of the designated open houses to see the layout and delicate decorations inside. I finally fulfilled a desire to visit here in the snowy winter. It was great. Due to Covid buses are reduced so double check your schedule. Nothing from Toyama but Takaoka and Takayama is ok. more »

Luckily the place wasn't so crowded when I went there (ironically, thanks to COVID-19) but the weather was very unstable, thanks to an oncoming typhoon. The traditional thatched roof houses were... more »

So far, it is the best place I have visited in Japan. A beautiful and great place to visit once in a lifetime. I visited this place during the winter season but sadly, I missed the snowing time. Despite the fact that most people usually like to take a photo with the snow on the top of the roof, during other seasons also seem to be attractive. This place is also a World Heritage Place so it been worth it to visit. There are lots of houses that are used as restaurants and souvenir shops. It is good for you to be well prepared about the clothes because the temperature can be as low as zero degree. I think it is a 'must' place to visit when you have a chance to travel in Japan.

Beautiful and charming place ... It can be visited and enjoyed throughout the year, as its beauty is charming in any season. During the winter, it is beautiful to see the snow. For those who want to go this time of year, it is good to go with snow tires and well equipped with warm clothes, as the cold is intense. In summer, ideal is to use plenty of sunscreen and a cap because the sun is very hot ... Even so, the landscape, the history of the place and its natural beauty are very worthwhile!!!!1
