Eternal City

Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Get some historical perspective at Colosseum and Vatican Museums. Do some cultural sightseeing at Pantheon and Palatine Hill. Go for a jaunt from Rome to Tivoli to see Villa Adriana about 36 minutes away. There's lots more to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at St. Peter's Basilica, admire the local landmark of Trevi Fountain, explore the different monuments and memorials at Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, and admire the masterpieces at Galleria Borghese.

To see other places to visit, photos, and tourist information, refer to the Rome day trip planning tool.

If you are flying in from Spain, the closest major aiports are Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport and Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport. Expect a daytime high around 16°C in December, and nighttime lows around 4°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.
