The country's first established capital, Nara houses some of the most storied buildings and natural attractions in Japan, with eight World Heritage Sites in total.
Venture out of the city with trips to Ishitera Tea Plantation (in Wazuka-cho), Iwakura Valley (in Iga) and Mt. Yoshino (in Yoshino-cho). There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Todai-ji Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kofuku-ji Temple, see the interesting displays at Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, and explore the activities along Saho River.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Kyoto is known for historic sites, shopping, and classes. Your plan includes some of its best attractions: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, go for a walk through Arashiyama, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and take a stroll through Gion.

Traveling by car from Nara to Kyoto takes an hour. Alternatively, you can take a train. Traveling from Nara in March, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Kyoto, with lows of 40°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 18th (Wed) so you can catch the train to Himeji.
