Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Attractions like Colosseum and Palatine Hill make great kid-friendly stops. Pantheon and St. Peter's Basilica will appeal to history buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Rome side-trips: Tivoli (Villa Adriana & Villa d'Este). There's still lots to do: explore the world behind art at Vatican Museums, enjoy breathtaking views from Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo, take in the spiritual surroundings of Cupola di San Pietro, and take a stroll through Trastevere.

Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Doge's Palace and Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Attractions like Canal Grande and Piazza San Marco make great kid-friendly stops. There's much more to do: admire the landmark architecture of Basilica di San Marco, steep yourself in history at Squero di San Trovaso, enjoy breathtaking views from St Mark's Campanile, and make a trip to Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo).
