The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Historic Village Herberton and McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery. You'll get in some beach time at Four Mile Beach and Palm Cove Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Port Douglas (Whileaway, Funstuff by Lynda, &more), Daintree Discovery Centre (in Cow Bay) and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Wangetti). Spend the 3rd (Fri) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Spend the 18th (Sat) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. The adventure continues: tour the pleasant surroundings at Esplanade Boardwalk, hunt for treasures at Night Markets, explore the galleries of Underart Gallery, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at St Monica's Cathedral.

For reviews, maps, traveler tips, and other tourist information, refer to the Cairns trip itinerary maker tool.

In March, daytime highs in Cairns are 36°C, while nighttime lows are 27°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.
