The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
For shopping fun, head to Nishiki Market Shopping District or Kyoto Station Building. Your inner history buff will appreciate Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, visit Arashiyama, and get engrossed in the history at Kyoto National Museum.
