Near the confluence of the Chikuma and Sai rivers, Nagano combines historic sites with nearby forested alps dotted with shrines.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Snow Monkey Resorts as well as Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): look for all kinds of wild species at Iizuna Highlands Oyachi Marsh and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Zenko-ji Temple. On your second day here, surround yourself with nature on Snow Monkey Resorts, identify plant and animal life at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, then take an in-depth tour of Togakushi Folk Museum Togakushi Ninja Museum, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Togakushi Shrine Okusha, and finally step into the grandiose world of Matsushiro Castle.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Nagano in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Tokyo in January, with highs in Nagano at 3°C and lows at -3°C. You'll have a few hours on the 4th (Sat) to wrap things up before traveling to Hakuba-mura.

Get some cultural insight at Hakuba and Himegawa Headwaters Natural Garden. Step out of the city life by going to Hakuba Happoone Ski Resort and Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Hakuba-mura: Tateyama-machi (Kurobe Dam & Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route) and Tsugaike Natural Park (in Otari-mura). Next up on the itinerary: tour the pleasant surroundings at Hakuba Snow Sports School, hit the slopes at Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort / Alpine Garden, trek along Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort, and take in the views from Hakuba Ohashi Bridge.

Getting from Nagano to Hakuba-mura by shuttle takes about an hour. Other options: drive; or take a bus. January in Hakuba-mura sees daily highs of 3°C and lows of -3°C at night. You will have some time to spend on the 11th (Sat) before leaving for Takayama.

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Keep things going the next day: get to know the fascinating history of The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses, then admire the landmark architecture of Takayama Jinya, then wander the streets of Sanmachi Suji, and finally stop by Takayama Usagiya.

Traveling by car from Takayama to Kyoto takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Takayama in January: highs in Kyoto hover around 10°C, while lows dip to 1°C. On the 18th (Sat), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
