Getting from Tokyo to Nagano by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in January, expect Nagano to be little chillier, temps between 3°C and -3°C. On the 4th (Sat), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Hakuba-mura.

Skiing enthusiasts traveling in Japan should consider a trip to Hakuba-mura: tucked away in the Northern Alps, this village hosted several competitions during the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics.
You've added Hakuba Sanosaka Ski Resort, Hakuba Norikura Onsen Ski Resort, Happoone, and other attractions to your itinerary. Step out of the city life by going to Hakuba Snow Sports School and Hakuba. The adventure continues: hit the slopes at Hakuba Happoone Ski Resort, trek along Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort, and take in nature's colorful creations at Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort / Alpine Garden.

You can drive from Takayama to Kyoto in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. While traveling from Takayama, expect somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto, ranging from highs of 10°C to lows of 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 18th (Sat) to allow time for travel back home.
