The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Your inner history buff will appreciate Nijo Castle and Toji. Change things up with a short trip to Jishu Shrine in Otsu (about 58 minutes away). On the 16th (Mon), don't miss a visit to Itsukushima Shrine Torii, step off the mainland to explore Miyajima, thenkick back and relax at Mikasahama Beach, and finally take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Misen.
