Kyoto

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step off the beaten path and head to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Yasaka Shrine. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji are good opportunities to explore the local culture. When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Dotombori District in Dotombori, approximately Dotombori away. There's lots more to do: step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, take in the spiritual surroundings of Ginkakuji Temple, go for a walk through Philosopher's Walk, and steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Traveling by train from Hiroshima to Kyoto takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In March, daytime highs in Kyoto are 16°C, while nighttime lows are 5°C. On the 18th (Sat), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
