Eternal City

Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Pantheon and Vatican Museums. Venture out of the city with trips to Tivoli (Villa Adriana & Villa d'Este). There's lots more to do: get to know the fascinating history of Piazza Navona, browse the eclectic array of goods at Porta Portese, don't miss a visit to Roman Forum, and shop like a local with Via Condotti.

To see reviews, where to stay, more things to do, and more tourist information, read our Rome day trip site.

If you are flying in from Belgium, the closest major aiports are Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport and Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi – Umbria International Airport. In August, daytime highs in Rome are 38°C, while nighttime lows are 24°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Sat) so you can travel back home.
