The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Dotombori District and Kyoto Station Building. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Nara (Nara Park & Todai-ji Temple) and Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (in Kobe). Naha, the capital of Okinawa, has deep roots: Stone Age relics have been found in the city, and through the Middle Ages it rose in importance in the Ryukyu Kingdom.
For shopping fun, head to Yomitan Village Traditional Craft Art Center or Kaisou, Kokusaidori. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Toyosaki Kaihin Koen and Furuzamami Beach.
