The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Visit Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Tochoji Temple for their historical value. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Mojiko Retro and Kokura Castle. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Kitakyushu (Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History & Kanmon Kaikyo) and Kyushu National Museum (in Dazaifu). There's still lots to do: browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, stop by Marinoa City Fukuoka, enjoy breathtaking views from Fukuoka Tower, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Hakozaki Shrine.
