The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Mojiko Retro and Yatai are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at AMU PLAZA HAKATA and Kawabatadori Shopping Street. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Fukuoka: Kitakyushu (Mojiko Station, Kokura Castle, & more) and Dazaifu (Kyushu National Museum & Dazaifu Temmangu Shrine). Next up on the itinerary: enjoy some diversion at Ohori Park, contemplate the long history of Fukuoka Castle Remains, take a stroll through Nishijin Shopping District, and look for gifts at Marinoa Fukuoka.
