City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Visit Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Tochoji Temple for their historical value. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Mojiko Retro and Kokura Castle. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Kitakyushu (Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History & Kanmon Kaikyo) and Kyushu National Museum (in Dazaifu). There's still lots to do: buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center, go for a walk through Fukuoka Tower, wander the streets of Nishijin Shopping District, and stroll around Ohori Park.
