The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Head to AMU PLAZA HAKATA and Kawabatadori Shopping Streetfor some retail therapy. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Mojiko Retro and Yatai. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Kitakyushu (Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History, Kokura Castle, & more) and Dazaifu (Kyushu National Museum, Hikoroku, & more). There's much more to do: go for a walk through Ohori Park, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, browse the range of quality goods at Hakata Hankyu, and take a stroll through Nishijin Shopping District.
