The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Mojiko Retro and Nishijin Shopping District are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Head to Tenjin Underground Shopping Center and JR Hakata City Amu Plaza Hakatafor some retail therapy. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Fukuoka: Dazaifu (Kyushu National Museum, Hikoroku, &more) and Kitakyushu (Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History, Kokura Castle, &more). There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, walk around Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, steep yourself in history at Fukuoka Castle Ruins, and admire the masterpieces at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.
