Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'Assisi
World Heritage listed, Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'Assisi features frescoes by Giotto, Lorenzetti, Martini, and Cimabue. St. Francis' monumental tomb is also located within the complex, which dates back to the 12th century. The info office, opposite the entrance into the lower church, can help you schedule a guided tour in English--probably the best way to appreciate this artistic and architectural gem of medieval Italy. Extremely interesting and important historic site You have to have some agility to navigate stairs. The tomb and the lower Basilica were both very impressive.

This is a MUST stop when in Assisi - full of history and beauty. The reverence felt here is an enjoyable break from the usual commotion of an Italian holiday.

Simply astonishing! I was totally blown away by the medieval art and depiction of saints Francis and Jesus Christ. It was surreal to see where he was buried as it's a prayer sanctuary. There were quite a few believers who were praying. It's a great place to visit with family. It's definitely worth a visit. There are some covid19 protocols in place so there weren't too many people and masks are mandatory.

Church used to be an extraordinary example of medieval Italian architecture, but it never recovered from recent earthquake that made parts of Basilica crash. Frescoes inside, especially in upper basilica, are to a large extent damaged beyond repair. Lower basilica is in better shape, though. A few of remaining frescoes are by Giotto himself, most by his followers (of lesser quality) and some by Cimabue (including saint's portrait).
