More than a geological attraction, Orvieto Underground offers tours of an underground city. Inhabitants spent 2,500 years digging cavities into the earth, which overlap and intersect beneath the modern structure of the city. This location connects us to an ancient and mysterious pre-Roman people: the Etruscans. The caverns have served as galleries, cellars, cisterns, and more. Medieval families of nobility had access to these caves via secret escape tunnels. Wear shoes for walking up and down many steps. Tour guides speak fluent English. • This is an excellent adventure back in time to both Etruscan and medieval Orvieto. The caves are hewn from volcanic rock by the ancient residents for security, working spaces, and even for housing...

  • Great tour! Besides the impressive caves, what I found most impressive was the view on route to the underground. The guide was also excellent in explaining the history and background. There are a few steps to go up and down. Please be careful. Also you need to book the tour in advance. You can’t just show up for the tour.
  • I didn't really know what to expect. Only 2 "caves" but the story of how they dug wells and made olive oil was interesting. Not expensive so a good way to kill an hour
