One of five national churches of France located in Italy, Church of St. Louis of the French features three world-renowned paintings by the Baroque master Caravaggio representing the major events from the life of St. Matthew. Artist Domenichino, whose portrayal of the life of St. Cecilia is considered one of his masterpieces, created many of the frescoes. Several other notable artists worked on the decoration of the interior. The church was constructed between 1518 and 1589. It was eventually completed though the personal intervention of Catherine de Medici, an Italian noblewoman who was the wife and mother of several French kings. If you like Caravaggio paintings, this is the place to come - especially the wonderful “Vocation of St. Matthew”. It’s close to the Piazza Navona and is well worth the visit.

The church is not huge by any means and not particularly beautiful. But, oh my, you have those three Caravaggio originals featuring Matthew. Even if you don't want to visit churches and basilicas...

If this isn’t on your list of places to visit in Rome, add it now! Beautiful baroque church with incredible art from some dead guy named Caravaggio (sarcasm). The only reason I’m giving 4 starts instead of 5 is I don’t necessarily agree with the pay per view aspect of the paintings. In order to illuminate the painting for a period of ~2 minutes someone must insert 1-2 € into a machine. Otherwise, this is an absolute gem and must visit if you appreciate art!

A personal favorite out of all the churches and places I've gone on this Italy trip. The ceiling is beautiful. The numerous altars lining the inner walls are fantastic. This church will get very popular during peak hours so please remember to remain quiet out of respect. People were asked to be silent numerous times on our stay over the loudspeaker which was very disrupting.
