Look over the rooftops of Rome at Colle del Gianicolo, set on a hill that extends all the way to the Basilica of St. Peter. You'll be high enough to see the major monuments and smaller side streets. Every day at noon a single cannon announces midday from the hill. For a preview of your visit, watch the opening scene of the film "The Great Beauty," which shows the attraction in all its glory. Fantastic view over Rome city center and the surrounding hills. We went at night time, lovely. You won't see Saint Peter's dome from the main viewing point; you have to go on the other side of the hill, 50m, to see it.

Every tourist should get there to have a proper panoramic view of Rome. Especially if visiting in couples, the view this panoramic point offers it's priceless. You can easily get there, as it's right next to the center, there's a bus stop nearby. There are a few kiosks serving food and beverages, nothing fancy but still acceptable. Do not adventure in the darks surroundings at night. You want to visit when it's not busy, so avoid weekends or get there late at night.
