Throw a coin over your left shoulder into Trevi Fountain, the legend claims, and you are sure to eventually return to the city. Undoubtedly one of the most photographed sites in the city, the fountain was designed by architect Nicola Salvi and built in 1762. Standing at 26 m (86 ft) high and 49 m (161 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city. Fans of Italian cinema easily recognize this site, which has appeared in numerous notable films, including director Federico Fellini's famed "La Dolce Vita." Lovely big fountain but always Very busy it may be worth making it a one way system so everyone can see the fountain for what it is not through a crowd of people

The trevi fountain is an absolute must see when in Rome. Busy all day long, especially before dinner and when lit up at night. Best time is mornings.

UPDATED 2022: Still one of the busiest spots in Rome I think, but beautiful and still some great spots for those all important photos. I'm glad we went back to see it again, but in 33 degree heat all I wanted to do was jump in the fountain. Lovely to sit on the steps opposite for a bit of lunch with a view - you can still admire the fountain but you're out the way of the crowds. Beautiful place, busy but plenty of places to get great photos!

In my opinion the nicest of the usual tourist attractions, lovely little square & not too busy this time of year although I wonder in the summer if you could get anywhere near it. As you can see by the photo there is nice little bars around the plaza to watch the world go by & not overpriced. Lost a star because of the overflowing bins & rubbish on the floor around the fountain, needs bigger bins or more regular clean ups but overall a nice spot.
