Dedicated to the Shinto god of learning Tenjin, Dazaifu Tenman-gu traces its origins back to the year 905. Wander the complex and admire the ornate woodcarvings, red-gold accents, and classic swooping rooftops that adorn the buildings, particularly the lavishly decorated main shrine. Stroll through the shrine's surrounding gardens, featuring ponds, bridges, and other smaller structures surrounded by Asian plum trees. Don't miss a chance to try a local type of grilled bean cake, known as umegae mochi--you'll find it sold by many vendors along the main trail to the shrine. Amazing place to see! Definitely recommend. After you explore the main garden and shrine, adventure behind it in the trees. You may even just stumble upon another shrine like we did! There are plenty of food and souvenir shops in the area as well. Definitely a fun outing ❤️

This is a major shrine in Japan, dedicated to those who are studying for a particular goal. During test seasons, you can see lots of young people lined up to give offerings to do well on said tests. The area itself is quite wide and scenic. Stepping back, Daizifu is the name of the former governing offices of the area. When those were moved, the name stuck for the current city name. Take a walk through and say a prayer, keep walking towards the mountain and find the the world-class national museum, and/or just take in the scenery. There is also a road with old and famous shops selling their wares and food. There are several places to park: those by the hour get pricey quickly if you stay long; look for those charging ¥500/day if you plan to take a lot in.
