Visit the historic Kokura Castle, a former clan and military base, now reconstructed and housing a number of cultural attractions. Built in 1602, the castle was central to regional clan wars, burnt down during the clash between the Kokura and Choshu clans in 1866, and used as a military base at the turn of the 20th century. The architecture of the keep--reconstructed in 1959--has a particularly aesthetic, with its tough stone base standing in contrast to the modern city that surrounds it. Stop off at the folklore museum during your visit, as well as the institution dedicated to crime writer Seicho Matsumoto. • The castle keep is a recent reconstruction after the original was demolished. It lacks authenticity but makes up for this with ease of access: wide easy staircases, even a lift. The all round views...

  • Great place for castle nerds, with information about the castle, and minor activities for kids. However, a castle is a castle. So if you don’t like Japanese history, this isn’t the place to go. Well, if you’re not into Japanese history you wouldn’t be reading this anyway so… Great spot! Would recommend.
  • An absolutely stunning sight to see. The beautiful Castle on the outside is just as great on the inside. If you’re in the neighborhood, you should definitely check it out!
