Larnach Castle & Gardens
Take in the 19th-century opulence and gorgeous gardens at Larnach Castle & Gardens, one of the largest mansions in New Zealand. Built in 1871 by politician and businessman William Larnach, the massive building has been gradually restored to its original splendor. Today, visitors can walk around the mansion to learn tales of scandalous history and to see sweeping views from the towers. The castle's sprawling grounds, named one of five Gardens of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, include native and exotic plants and a number of specialized gardens, such as the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, and the Alice Lawn. Sadly we didn't get to go to Larnach. We drove up to the gates and saw the costs and having a family of 5 is not an affordable trip out 5 x $37

I've been to Larnach Castle before and it is a nice stop when you're out on the peninsula to see the penguins or the albatrosses. It is a grand building with an interesting history perched with amazing views of the bay. It looks larger than it really is but it will take some time to make it through as there is a fair about of information and history. The grounds are also beautiful and you should plan to take your time to explore. At the end stop by the cafe for a little refreshment and enjoy the ambience of the ballroom. I've visited in the summer and winter and enjoyed it regardless of the season.

We paid for the gardens entry only, we didn’t go inside the castle. We were a family of four with an 8 year old and a baby. We popped bubs in the front pack and walked around the gardens which were so beautiful with lots of different plants and native trees, with some beautiful views out over the ocean. The exterior of the castle is unique. We had lunch in the cafe and it was delicious.
