Create an itinerary including The World's Steepest Street
While touring Dunedin, make sure to stop by The World's Steepest Street, the steepest street in the world and one of the city's best-known landmarks. A result of urban planning more concerned with maintaining a grid pattern than with actual terrain features, the street plummets at an incredible 35-percent gradient on its steepest section. The world-famous attraction hosts several annual events, including a grueling race to the top and back down again. For any cyclist visiting Dunedin, conquering the street's slope will certainly earn some bragging rights. A visit to The World's Steepest Street represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Dunedin trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Not only is it worth ticking this must do off your list, it’s well worth doing. It doesn’t take long and has some really pretty views of Dunedin (weather permitting).

  • Not a nice place. Just a very steep concrete road to which tourists are lured to the annoyance of local residents. If you want to do a bit of sport, you can race up the 350m long road as fast as you can. However, when you get to the top, you have a good view. When descending, you can easily check whether the knee joints are still in order.
  • Walked up. Found half a giant jaffa and tossed that down. It was good to tick it off the to do list. Beautiful view at the top. And a water fountain....
