Moeraki Boulders Beach
While on the Otago coast don't miss the chance to visit Moeraki Boulders Beach, one of the most famous natural attractions on the whole South Island. Scattered along the beach, these enigmatic rocks weigh up to several tons and many of them have an almost perfect spherical shape. While science identifies the boulders as concretions that have formed over millions of years, there are also many less scientific and legendary theories about their origin. The pristine beach on which the boulders are located is easily accessible and the nearby parking lot saves you a long hike to admire this famous phenomenon. Always a great inexpensive place to visit with friends and family. Enjoy something tasty off the menu before you walk it off with a stroll to see the boulders. You need a low tide to see the boulders and the amount of Boulders visible depends on whether the tide has covered or uncovered them. Gift shop available and you can buy food to feed the deer and alpacas.

On a tour of the South Island, we ran across a sign for the Moeraki Boulders Beach. I had recognized the name from a postcard I had spotted in a shop in Dunedin. Not knowing what to expect, we pulled in for a look. The beach was incredible, and the spherical rock formations look like artifacts from another planet! The beach is spacious and teeming with wildlife. Not too crowded with people, although we visited in winter and summer crowds might be thicker. There's a small restaurant on the bluff above the beach. A boardwalk and stairs take you down from the restaurant to the beach itself. Moeraki Boulders Beach is pretty incredible; you'd be hard-pressed to find anything else like it in your world travels.
