Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / South Island / Otago Region / Oamaru / Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony
The Colony is a tourism operation with a strong research and conservation focus. At the core of the operation is a long-term conservation programme that ensures the penguins are protected and that the population achieves long-term stability. An important and unique part of that conservation programme is the Colony's Research Scientist who is now one of New Zealand’s leading little penguin experts. The programme is not limited to work at the site however, but extends further afield to include protection and monitoring of penguins elsewhere within the region. To visit Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony on your trip to Oamaru, use our Oamaru journey planner.

We saw 158 penguins. We purchased premium tickets, so most of penguin are passing very closely. But we can not see how they're coming from sea. I think you can see it from opposite side pavilion. Even some penguin also gone through that pavilion. So if you looking for chipper option then go for it. At car park even we saw 4 penguin. Very nice experience, little expansive, but it is worth. I also went to Philips island in Melbourne, Australia. Number of penguin are more and different location, i.e. on sandy beach, so you can see penguins are coming from sea and passing closely.
All the staff were friendly and informative. In total that night we saw 110 penguins come back to shore. Very much worth the money and the wait (even though we didn’t have to wait long). Chloe who was speaking was very factual and Barbra was amazing look out for the penguins coming in! When we was leaving Helen on the front desk was lovely and kind to talk to. The whole experience exceeded our expectations and would highly recommend to anyone in the area!
