Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
The whole family can get a dynamic and in-depth overview of New Zealand at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, one of the nation's main cultural institutions. The museum's native name loosely translates as the "Place of Treasures," an apt description for a building featuring six floors of collections that include everything from Maori artifacts and medieval clothing to animal fossils and local arts. With high-tech galleries designed to engage and educate visitors of all ages, the exhibits narrate the history and development of the Pacific Islands. Be sure to walk through the national art collection, and for a hands-on family-oriented experience, head to one of the themed discovery centers. The easiest way to explore the vast galleries is by guided tour--these leave from the second-level info desk several times a day. Underwhelming, missing the exciting activities of my childhood. The exhibitions are largely focused on education about the environment and seem to come from a negative view point

We went to see the Rita Angus exhibit, which opened our eyes to the vibrant colour, layering and the strong geometric elements in Angus's work. You really do need to see the originals to understand how strong her colour palate was. Te Papa has the space and expertise to exhibit well. The touristy products are excellent, but expensive. However, they are well made and I did buy a less pricey item.

First trip to Te Papa for a few years. Great improvements made to cafe on ground floor. Modern menu, improved decor and great taste in food. We visited Level 2, 4 and 5. Level 2 the native species is much improved and has heaps of hands on displays. The earthquake house also updated which is great.
